We care for dogs, cats, small mammals, and reptiles with modern medicine, compassionate communication, and a warm, non-corporate feel.
Do you accept new clients?

Where are you located?

Are you locally owned or corporate-owned?
Montville Animal Hospital is local, independent, family-owned, and doctor-owned. The hospital is owned and operated by Drs. Paul and Kara Schubert, a husband-and-wife veterinary team who live in Montville and are raising their family here.
What types of pets do you see?
We care for dogs, cats, small mammals, rabbits, guinea pigs, and reptiles. We do not see birds.
Do you see exotic pets?
Yes. Dr. Kara has many years of experience with exotic pet medicine and surgery, including rabbits, guinea pigs, small mammals, and reptiles.
Do you see birds?
No. We do not see birds. For bird care, we recommend contacting a veterinarian who specifically sees avian patients.
How do I request an appointment?
You can request an appointment through the website, or call or text us at (973) 335-8007. Online appointment requests are not confirmed until our team contacts you. If your pet is sick today, please call or text instead of waiting for an online request to be reviewed.
What if my pet is sick today?
Please call or text us directly at (973) 335-8007. Online appointment requests are best for non-urgent visits. If your pet is vomiting repeatedly, not eating, painful, limping, coughing, having urinary issues, acting lethargic, or just not acting like themselves, calling or texting is the fastest way for us to help you figure out the next step.
Do you offer same-day sick appointments?
We do our best to accommodate sick pets when our schedule allows. Same-day availability varies, so please call or text as early as possible if your pet needs to be seen.
What should I do in an emergency?
If your pet is having trouble breathing, collapsing, having seizures, unable to urinate, bleeding heavily, severely painful, or you are worried something is life-threatening, please seek emergency veterinary care immediately. If you are unsure whether something is an emergency, call or text us during business hours and we can help guide you.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring any previous medical records, vaccine history, medication information, supplement information, and any recent lab work or imaging if you have it. If your pet is coming from another hospital, shelter, rescue, or breeder, those records are very helpful.
Do you offer online forms?
Yes. New client forms are available through our website so you can complete them before your visit.
How much will my pet’s visit cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of visit and what your pet needs. A wellness visit, sick visit, vaccines, lab work, imaging, medications, dental care, and surgery are all different. We are happy to provide estimates whenever possible, especially before hospital treatments, procedures, surgery, or dentistry.
Do you accept pet insurance?
Yes. We strongly encourage pet insurance. Pet insurance is typically a reimbursement plan, which means payment is still due to the hospital at the time services are provided, and then you submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement. We are happy to provide medical records and invoices needed for claims.
Do you recommend pet insurance?
Yes. We strongly recommend considering pet insurance, especially for unexpected illness, injury, emergency care, chronic conditions, and major procedures. The best time to get pet insurance is when your pet is young and healthy, before medical issues become pre-existing conditions.
We are not affiliated with any specific pet insurance company, but we can help discuss different types of plans based on your pet’s needs, age, breed, lifestyle, and your financial concerns.
Do you offer payment plans?
Payment is due at the time services are provided. For clients who need payment flexibility, we accept CareCredit, which may offer promotional financing plans for up to 12 months depending on eligibility and the services provided.
Do you do wellness visits and vaccines?
Yes. We provide wellness exams, vaccines, parasite prevention, heartworm and tick-borne disease screening, routine blood work, puppy and kitten care, senior pet care, and wellness care for exotic pets.
Do dogs and cats really need yearly exams?
Yes. Pets age faster than people, and many medical problems are easier to manage when they are caught early. A yearly exam also gives us a chance to review vaccines, parasite prevention, weight, dental health, behavior changes, pain, mobility, and any concerns you have noticed at home.
Do you customize vaccines?
Yes. We recommend vaccines based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, risk factors, health status, and vaccine history. Not every pet has the same needs, and we are happy to discuss what makes sense for your dog or cat.
Do you recommend year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention?
Yes. In New Jersey, we recommend year-round prevention. Ticks can be active during colder months, and we diagnose tick-borne diseases in dogs whose prevention has lapsed over the winter.
Do you offer dental cleanings?
Yes. We provide dental cleanings, dental radiographs, and oral surgery when needed. Dental disease is very common in dogs and cats and can cause pain, infection, bad breath, tooth loss, and changes in eating behavior.
Why does my pet need anesthesia for a dental cleaning?
A proper veterinary dental cleaning requires anesthesia so we can safely clean under the gumline, take dental X-rays, evaluate each tooth, and treat painful or infected areas. Awake dental cleanings may make teeth look cleaner on the surface, but they do not allow for complete evaluation or treatment.
Do you do surgery?
Yes. We offer many general surgery services, including spays, neuters, mass removals, wound repairs, oral surgery, and other soft tissue procedures. If your pet needs a procedure that would be better handled by a specialist, we will discuss referral options.
Do you treat pain and arthritis?
Yes. We care about pain management and quality of life. Depending on your pet’s needs, we may discuss medications, supplements, weight management, laser therapy, lifestyle changes, lab monitoring, or additional diagnostics.
Do you offer laser therapy?
Yes. Laser therapy may be recommended for certain pain, inflammation, wound healing, arthritis, or post-surgical recovery cases. We can discuss whether it makes sense for your pet.
Do you offer euthanasia or end-of-life care?
Yes. We provide compassionate hospice and end-of-life care. We know these decisions are incredibly emotional, and we will talk with you honestly and gently about your pet’s comfort, quality of life, and options.
Can I text the hospital?
Yes. You can text Montville Animal Hospital through our regular phone number: (973) 335-8007.
Can I order medications or food online?
Yes. We have an online pharmacy available through the website. This allows clients to order many medications, preventatives, and prescription diets with veterinary approval.
Why should I use your online pharmacy?
Our online pharmacy is connected to Montville Animal Hospital, which helps make prescription approvals smoother and ensures your pet’s medications, preventatives, and prescription diets are coming through a trusted veterinary pharmacy. Some medications require an exam, lab work, or an active doctor-patient relationship before approval.
Why do some medications require an exam or blood work?
Some medications can affect the liver, kidneys, thyroid, blood pressure, hydration, or other parts of the body. Exams and lab work help us prescribe safely and monitor your pet appropriately.
What makes Montville Animal Hospital different?
We are local, independent, family-owned, and doctor-owned. Our doctors live in the community and are raising their family here. We combine modern veterinary medicine with the warmth of a neighborhood hospital where clients and pets are known as individuals.
Why should I choose an independent veterinary hospital?
Many pet owners want a veterinary hospital that feels personal, consistent, and connected to the community. As an independent hospital, our decisions are guided by our doctors, our patients, our clients, and our team—not a corporate template.
Do you see second opinions?
For dogs and cats, we may be able to help with many second-opinion concerns depending on the case. For exotic pets, if your pet has already been evaluated by another veterinarian and is still not improving, we may recommend referral to a board-certified exotic pet specialist or emergency/specialty hospital.
What if my pet is nervous at the vet?
Please let us know. Many pets are anxious at the veterinarian, and we want visits to be as low-stress as possible. Depending on your pet, we may discuss treats, quieter handling, pre-visit medication, shorter visits, or other ways to make the experience easier.
Can I stay with my pet during the visit?
In most routine exam situations, yes. If your pet needs diagnostics, treatment, X-rays, procedures, or specialized handling, our team may take your pet to the treatment area for safety and efficiency.
Do you treat aggressive or very fearful pets?
Yes. We do our best to work with fearful pets safely and compassionately. If your pet has a history of biting, severe anxiety, or needing a muzzle or medication for veterinary visits, please tell us before the appointment so we can plan appropriately.
Do you have parking?
Yes. We have an on-site parking lot located behind the building for clients visiting Montville Animal Hospital.
What are your hours?
Please list current hours here and keep this updated if hours change.
